Prison rights activist have made a big impact on the horrible phone systems placed in jails and prisons all over the United States. Inmates and their families and friends have been burdened with the devastating costs of these phone calls and the horrible burden of setting up accounts with these phone systems. Now it seems progress has been made by pointing out to the FCC the prisons and jails themselves are making a lot of money out of the wallets and purses of the prisoners family and friends who just trying to keep in contact. This punishes the person trying to keep in contact with the inmate with an unreasonable financial burden and a key factor to preventing recidivism is family and community ties.
Sheriffs all over the country are complaining that if they can’t get their money because of the proposed new regulation by the FCC they are threatening shut down the phone systems. Really? Making money on prisoners and their families is not new to our current “correction” system but it must stop.
