This morning on my personal FB page I read posts describing the rioters in Baltimore as “people who don’t know how good they have it here in America”. The post suggested that these “thugs” should be shipped off to some other place on the planet, like earthquake ravished Nepal, as a comparison, then “they would know how good they have it” here in the USA. The comments on these posts were stating the frustration the posters were having watching all the damage the rioters were creating while nature was creating the same damage somewhere else on the planet.
I was frustrated reading these post because the way I look at it a natural disaster in Nepal has nothing to do with the man made destruction of a riot in Baltimore.
What is happening in Baltimore is very frustrating and some people think the rioting is happening because people are out of control. The thing is, we do have horribly at risk neighborhoods in America, and it is so easy to blame rioters, and call them thugs. However you have to ask yourself: if you were a black child raised in these neighborhoods with no way out because your parents are poor, with no way out, for a lot a good reasons, and you were raised where law enforcement employs a systemic culture of biased harassment you might just be frustrated enough to lose it when the boiling point arises. This rioting is a result of frustration. The Boston tea party was a riot by people who were frustrated by oppression, and yes I can make this a valid comparison because the rioting in Baltimore is the direct result of continued oppression by the cops, the citizens there feel as if they have no say in how they are governed. These are not just thugs stealing, these are poor pissed off citizens because they have been neglected through poverty and oppressed because they are black. We must work the problem not throw blame.
I say this to my FB friends that live in their safe, white neighborhoods where they are not killed by the police during a routine arrest: Go into your neglected neighborhoods and make things better.
